A bridegroom was arrested by the Village Peace and Development Council (VPDC) members in the second week of February for talking to his fiancée in his paternal aunt’s house at about 7:00 am, Hussain, a relative of the victim said.
The bridegroom has been identified as Md Anwar (25), son of Md Amin. He hailed from Konzar Bill (Kan Hpoo) village of Maungdaw Township.
The bridegroom recently got engaged with Khortiza (20) (not her real name), according to the rules and regulations of Islamic Law, after getting permission from the concerned authorities. However, the wedding ceremony was delayed due to the loss of the National Identity Card of the bride.
The bridegroom went to his paternal aunt’s house to fix up the date of the wedding ceremony after getting the permission from the concerned authority. Seeing this, the VPDC members arrested bridegroom Md. Anwar and handed him over to the Nasaka of area No.7. At present, he is in the custody of the Nasaka, another relative said on condition of anonymity.
The detainee has not been provided food from the camp, so food is sent from the house of his mother-in-law everyday.
The Nasaka demanded 500 bamboos from his mother-in-law, 500 bamboos from his father and another 500 bamboos from his paternal aunt for his release. At present, one hundred bamboos are being sold at Kyat 20,000 to 25,000. As a result, the relatives of the victim were unable to supply the bamboos and the victim was not released.
A village elder said, “It is not punishable for a bridegroom to talk to his engaged fiancée. It is a deliberate act against the victim as he is a Rohingya Muslim.”
